Panthers GM Gettleman: Draft needs are OT, WR, CB (The Associated Press)

General manager Dave Gettleman said the Panthers want a left tackle to protect Cam Newton’s blindside and a young wide receiver for the Pro Bowl quarterback to throw to this season. Gettleman also pointed to cornerback as an area of need as Carolina prepares for the May 8-10 NFL draft. But the second-year GM insisted Tuesday in a pre-draft press conference the Panthers won’t stretch to fill any of those needs if the right player isn’t available. ”When you make up your mind to take a position because of need, more often than not you’re going to make a mistake,” Gettleman said.

Troy Vincent to speak with suspended players (The Associated Press)

Troy Vincent is hitting the road in his new job as the NFL’s football operations director, meeting with players who have been suspended for on-field incidents. Nor did Vincent reveal the identity of other players who are on a league list of those closing in on suspensions for further on-field rules violations. ”It’s all about educating,” says Vincent, who recently replaced Ray Anderson in one of the league’s most powerful jobs. It’s about taking the guessing out.” Among the players suspended by the league last season were Texans defensive end Antonio Smith, Titans safety Michael Griffin, Buccaneers safety Dashon Goldson, Redskins safety Brandon Merriweather and Colts linebacker Erik Walden, each for one regular-season game.
