Bengals win 3rd straight, hold off Bucs 14-13 (The Associated Press)

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Andy Dalton ran for one touchdown and threw to A.J. Green for another Sunday, helping the Cincinnati Bengals stay atop the AFC North with a sloppy 14-13 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Bucs lose out on chance to win because of 12-men-on-field penalty (Shutdown Corner)

It appeared that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers put themselves in a position to shock the Cincinnati Bengals in the waning moments in Week 13. With 32 seconds left, Josh McCown hit Louis Murphy on a 21-yard pass on 2nd and 15 down to the Cincinnati 20-yard line. The catch appeared to be a game-sealer, with the Bengals leading 14-13 but unable to do much about the Bucs’ impending field-goal attempt to take the lead. Except … The Bengals threw a challenge flag. Yes, it’s illegal under the two-minute warning, and a few corners of Twitter lit up with “LOL Marvin Lewis”-related shlock. It cost the Bengals a timeout as penalty. However, it was well worth it. Lewis pointed out that the Buccaneers had 12 men on the field on the play, and a 12-men penalty is reviewable after a clock stoppage. The refs checked, and yep: 12 Buccaneers on the field, with the old four-wide, one-TE, two-back formation. Extra offensive lineman Oniel Cousins reported eligible on the play, but there’s no way to know who the guilty party was until we hear from Bucs head coach Lovie Smith on this one.  So instead, the Bucs were assessed a five-yard penalty, and the play was negated, which put them out of field-goal range. After three more cracks at gaining a first down with 20 yards to go, the Bucs came up just short. The Bengals, your AFC North leaders at 8-3-1, won the game despite Andy Dalton’s three picks and that wild (and somewhat fortunate) finish. Been that kind of season for the Buccaneers, who fell to 2-10 in Smith’s first season in Tampa. – – – – – – – Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip?
