Raiders should reward Donald Penn with new contract

NAPA — As the Raiders lined up for their first team session of training camp, there was a big hole where Donald Penn should be. Of course, it wasn’t a hole, it was instead projected right tackle Marshall Newhouse. The Raiders were carrying on as football teams do, adhering to the time-honored “next man up” philosophy when a key player is either injured or goes AWOL. Yet make no mistake, Newhouse is not Penn, and Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie’s first public contract issue since he came aboard in 2012 is potentially a big problem. The Raiders need to make things right with Penn, and they need to do it quickly. As expected, Penn was a no-show Saturday and wants a considerable bump in pay
